Mayor Ivan Allen Jr served as the mayor of Atlanta from 1962-1970 who served as a liberal leader striving for integration in a primarily segregated city. He started integration by establishing agrements with local citizens to desegregate their shops/restaurants. His fame and respect increased when he testified his support towards Kennedy's civil rights bill in front of Congress despite possible blacklash from the South.
